COUNTY OF BUCHANAN County Attorney

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE the Buchanan County, Virginia Board of Supervisors seeks qualified applicants for the position of Buchanan County Attorney. Applicants must be licensed members of the Virginia State Bar in good standing with at least three years of experience. Experience in local government law, administrative law, real property law, government contracts, and collections is preferred. Duties include representing the Board, its various authorities, committees, and commissions, as well the County Administration and Constitutional Officers, including but not limited to the County Planning Commission, Recreational Development Authority and other local agencies as assigned. The position will be a full-time in-house counsel position with VRS retirement and health insurance benefits. Interested applicants must submit a cover letter, a resume, and a Buchanan County Employee Application by mail or in person (email is not accepted) delivered to the Office of the County Administrator, Third Floor of the Buchanan County Government Center, 4447 Slate Creek Road, P.O. Drawer 950, Grundy, Virginia 24614 labeled "Attention County Administrator" on or before 4:30 PM, Friday, March 6, 2026. Applicants must be willing to submit to a criminal background check and credit check. The successful candidate must either live in Buchanan County or be willing to relocate to Buchanan County as a full-time resident of Buchanan County. Application forms are available on the County's website at https://buchanancountyvirginia.gov. It is anticipated that the Board of Supervisors will conduct interviews during the last three weeks of March 2026 with a hiring decision to be made at the Board of Supervisors' April 6, 2026 Board meeting. The plan is for the newly hired attorney to start working full time with the current County Attorney in early May 2026 to become familiar with the job. The current County Attorney's effective retirement date is July 1, 2026. It is anticipated that the newly hired attorney will be appointed as the new County Attorney after July 1, 2026.
