CITY OF NORFOLK Assistant or Deputy City Attorney (2 positions)

The Norfolk City Attorney's Office seeks applicants for two Assistant or Deputy City Attorney positions.  Focusing primarily on transactional matters, the successful candidates will provide legal services to city departments, agencies, and City Council in a wide variety of practice areas particular to local government. Areas of responsibility may include real estate development, general real estate, leasing, land use, zoning, eminent domain/condemnation, government contract compliance, construction contracts and claims, procurement, grants compliance issues, and general business matters, including negotiating and drafting real estate purchase and development agreements, leases, franchise agreements, and contracts, and providing advice regarding and interpreting contracts. Duties may also involve representation of various city boards and commissions, interpretation and drafting of codes, statutes, regulations, ordinances, and policies, and provision of legal advice regarding the applicability of constitutional, statutory, and regulatory provisions to local governance and administration.  Some related litigation and other business-related litigation, such as tax and bankruptcy litigation, may be involved.

FIRST POSITION: Admission to Virginia State Bar required. Five or more years of relevant legal experience preferred.  Local government experience preferred. Position and salary commensurate with experience. Position will be filled at the Assistant or Deputy City Attorney level depending on experience. Generous and comprehensive benefits package. SECOND POSITION: Admission to Virginia State Bar preferred; pending admission considered.  Local government experience preferred.
